How Experts Say The Social Media Landscape Will Evolve In 2012

In a previous post, we mentioned the great info you can find in the Answers section of LinkedIn. Recently, a good question popped up that yielded some interesting responses. I figured I’d share some excerpts from that forum with our MONSTER friends today…

This question came from Vandana Puranik, Founder of Active Ingredients Inc., with answers from a handful of other LinkedIn professionals below:

What is your take on what the social media landscape looks like today & how it will evolve this year and beyond?

“Proper integration of social media sites with the corporate website will become the key issue for years to come.”-William T. Cooper

“I believe that 2012 will go down as The Year of Social Engagement. In 2011, brand marketers were focused on growing their fan base as rapidly as possible. With all the analytics data that was gathered in 2011 it became clear that the newsfeed is where engagment truly happens. Now it will be increasingly important to figure out how best to reach social influencers across the social networks. Google+ will ultimately steal millions of users from Facebook splitting market share. Photo and video social networks like Instagram, Pinterest, etc will also become important for brands trying to reach those audiences.” -Caleb Edwards

“I believe that video (esp. as a tool for searching) and mobile marketing will be the two biggest social media growth areas for 2012, so that’s where I’m going to focus most of my learning efforts this year.” -Scott Swanay

“I’ve got a big feeling that video or face-time style social networking will be on the rise this year. With Google+ releasing their Hangout feature and Facebook including video in their Chat function it seems social media platforms are really trying to encourage personal face-to-face connections and video seems to be the way to do that…” -Andy Havard

“I’d say integration with mobile platforms become more prominent and improving the mobile browsing experience for social media.” -Gabrielle Jeans

“Various tablets will grow exponentially in 2012, Apple, Samsung Galaxy and others. Galaxy is quite good and should get some traction in 2012. Droids & iphones will become the ultimate communication devices, especially for those operating outside an office environment.” -Mark Amtower

“Social media will become more about engagement and forming relationships, where consumers and clients will interact with each other, whether it be through comments on Facebook business pages, hangouts on Google+, or conversations on Twitter. Also, with mobile playing a bigger role, I think there will be more apps that will give easier access to information and serve as another way to interact with the brand.” -Ji-Sook Yim

“Social media isn’t going anywhere. And regardless of what we all think about business and marketing, it will evolve in the ways people want to communicate with each other. Businesses will always be behind this – and I think that’s a good thing.” -Dawud Miracle

Insightful stuff. Some key takeaways here: Google+, Mobile and Video.

If these are not part of your business’ social media strategy for the coming year, you may want to think about adding them to your goals and initiatives. Stay social, monsters!
