TikTok’s Time Could Be Tik-Tik-Ticking Away
The platform that took young people by storm saw a tidal wave of new users during quarantining.
According to Adweek and Comscore data, TikTok brought in 22.2 million mobile unique visitors in January, 23.2 million in February and 28.8 million in March. In April (the middle of the country’s stay-at-home orders), the number of unique visitors flooded the service at an astounding 39.2 million—three times the 12.6 million who used the app in April of 2019.
That’s an impressive jump in engagement with the social platform. The data also indicates the extra time that older generations have had during the quarantine to explore TikTok. Even though it’s growing, there is concern that a shift in an older audience is going to tear the very fabric that made it a cool place to flock to in the first place.
Our question is, will young people jump ship and leave TikTok for a new social platform? Only time will tell. TikTok… TikTok.
Note: Gen Z is defined as mid-to-late 1990s as starting birth years and the early 2010s as ending birth years. That math makes most in that demographic 8-25 years old (potentially). Also, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) limits account creation to those under the age of 13 without the consent of a parent/guardian.
