Godzilla Leaves a Mighty Mark on Movie Posters

On May 31, Godzilla, the kaiju king, returns to the Cineplex after a five-year absence in Godzilla: King of the Monsters to once again save humanity and possibly the franchise. If its posters are any sign; it’s off to a kingly start.

2014’s Godzilla was a disappointment. There was little Godzilla and when he did appear, we could barely see him! For a film titled Godzilla, there was a lot left to be desired. Godzilla: King of the Monsters is positioning itself not to make the same mistake.

According to its website, the film “follows the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against… god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah… leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.”

The synopsis makes one expect epic scale with monsters front and center. Thus far, the trailers have led us to believe that will happen, but trailers can be misleading (case in point: 2014’s Godzilla). However, hope’s flame is eternal because the film’s posters, specifically the IMAX and 3D ones, are providing a good sign. I’m not a poster guy, but what was unveiled in May were gorgeously colored eye candy that teases blockbuster battle sequences!

The posters are breathtaking in their artwork and immensity; but the most important feature is GODZILLA IS FRONT AND CENTER in all his kingly, atomic breath glory! He’s there, he’s big, bathed in a beautiful blue smoke and duking it out with King Ghidorah, surrounded by crackling red-orange lighting. That’s advertising.

Early reviews provide hope this installment knows whom its star is. Only the wide-release will show if it lives up to the hype (Kong: Skull Island did). So far, so good because not only is Godzilla King of the Monsters, but also King of the Posters.
