Celebs Experience Judgment Day in Virtual Reality
The apocalypse is reliable entertainment material. While battles through various Judgment Day scenarios can be utterly suspenseful, it can also be humorous at times. To advertise its Oculus Go VR product last Christmas, Oculus made an ad featuring actress Awkwafina, hot off Crazy Rich Asians, watching AMC’s The Walking Dead with then-SNL star Leslie Jones via the VR tool. They discussed what they’d do in a zombie apocalypse (hint: katana).
For much of 2018, VR sales were “eh,” but around the holiday, Oculus Go crept into Amazon’s Top-50 and stayed there with the 32GB version peaking at #39 and the 64GB at #34. The ad proved the apocalypse isn’t always about blood and guts; it can spark holiday sales and be oddly funny too.
