Payless Becomes Zombie Footwear (Dead But Still Alive)
In March 2019, Payless ShoeSource filed for bankruptcy, closing its 2,100 stores in the U.S., liquidating its sales and putting the nail in the coffin of its e-commerce. The closing is the leading shut down by a single chain in 2019—nearly doubling fellow retailers set to bite the dust this year. However, interesting enough, this did not affect Payless’ Latin American stores, which remain open! Still, the shoe chain, which was once the largest specialty footwear retailer in the Western Hemisphere with more than 3,500 stores in 40 countries worldwide and nearly 18,000 employees is kaput … hey, here’s a thought: if zombies do rise this Halloween, they’ll probably be sporting Payless!
